Derby bus lanes to be removed?
And Allestree service to depart bus station for the final time
27/2/2011 Derby City Council recently announced its plans to remove Derbys bus lanes on Kedleston Rd and Duffield Rd, both busy corridors into the City, served by trent barton bus routes. Views on the bus lane have been mixed from the start, with those against the lanes claiming their introduction has made the roads more dangerous, due to the road not being wide enough for 3 lanes. On the other hand, they do not appear to have worsened the congestion, and speed up bus journey times during rush hour. What has also angered many people is the cost, £50000 to remove the lanes! This is on top of the cost of implementing them in the first place, all at a time when cuts are being made left right and centre. Trent barton have set up a campaign to save Derby's bus lanes. Coincidentally, from 1st May the Allestree route, which will be affected by the Kedleston Rd bus lane being removed, will no longer use the new Derby Bus Station. The PVR for the route is also expected to be cut from 6 buses to 5. It is set to use a different route too, coming into the City via Victoria St and terminating on Albert St. Buses leaving Derby will use Derwent Street to speed up journeys out of the City. This coincidence appears to have caused a local rift between the Council and trent barton following the initial report in the Derby Telegraph newspaper last week with the headline: bus lane saga, company accused of retaliation . The article suggests trent barton had no plans to change the Allestree service at all, quite strange when the service changes were registered with Vosa a few days later. So was it a snap decision made without passenger consultation, or just planned all along? |
